Demographics and discussion influence views on algorithmic fairness

چکیده

The field of algorithmic fairness has highlighted ethical questions which may not have purely technical answers. For example, different algorithmic fairness constraints are often impossible to satisfy simultaneously, and choosing between them requires value judgments about which people may disagree. Achieving consensus on algorithmic fairness will be difficult unless we understand why people disagree in the first place. Here we use a series of surveys to investigate how two factors affect disagreement: demographics and discussion. First, we study whether disagreement on algorithmic fairness questions is caused partially by differences in demographic backgrounds. This is a question of interest because computer science is demographically non-representative. If beliefs about algorithmic fairness correlate with demographics, and algorithm designers are demographically non-representative, decisions made about algorithmic fairness may not reflect the will of the population as a whole. We show, using surveys of three separate populations, that there are gender differences in beliefs about algorithmic fairness. For example, women are less likely to favor including gender as a feature in an algorithm which recommends courses to students if doing so would make female students less likely to be recommended science courses. Second, we investigate whether people’s views on algorithmic fairness can be changed by discussion and show, using longitudinal surveys of students in two computer science classes, that they can.

Web measurement for fairness and transparency.docx

Let’s consider some examples. The “filter bubble” arises when algorithmic systems, such as Google search or the Facebook news feed, decide what information to show a user based on her past pattern of searches and clicks. The worry is that users will be fed reinforcing viewpoints and eventually be isolated in their own bubble. At the level of demographics, the seemingly fair principle of treatin...

Asymmetric De-biasing in Negotiation

Egocentric notions of fairness lead to conflict escalation, impasse, and efficiency losses. While communication may attenuate this self-serving bias, the authors find that more powerful parties are relatively less inclined to adjust their fairness views following communication in a negotiation. A more even reduction of egocentrism is achieved when parties are exhorted to communicate under delib...

Inherent Trade-Offs in the Fair Determination of Risk Scores

Recent discussion in the public sphere about algorithmic classification has involved tension between competing notions of what it means for a probabilistic classification to be fair to different groups. We formalize three fairness conditions that lie at the heart of these debates, and we prove that except in highly constrained special cases, there is no method that can satisfy these three condi...

The Role of Procedural Justice and Legitimacy in Shaping Public Support for Policing

This study explores two issues about police legitimacy. The first issue is the relative importance of police legitimacy in shaping public support of the police and policing activities, compared to the importance of instrumental judgments about (1) the risk that people will be caught and sanctioned for wrongdoing, (2) the performance of the police in fighting crime, and/or (3) the fairness of th...
